The Vocabulary Builder Workbook: Simple Lessons and Activities to Teach Yourself Over 1,400 Must-Know Words Pdf Book Description:

People today have a tendency to assume I have always excelled at words. I am a decent Scrabble player, include SAT phrases in dialogue without even realizing it, and also do anagrams in my mind for fun. Now I’m a”vocabulary pro” in Magoosh, my inherent verbal ability looks like a foregone conclusion. Nevertheless, it was not always this way. Once I was in middle school, I recall having to search for language quizzes and dreading the encounter. To make things worse, my dad would get excited each time he saw me using the language book open. However many syllables the term included, he would throw off definitions with aplomb, pressing me for yet another, how a little child might request candy. Meanwhile, I’d be condemned to uttering no over three-syllable words and also to inferior levels on language quizzes.

I redoubled my efforts at analyzing, and while my quiz scores did inch upward slightly, I believed that my dad existed on a vocabulary plane that I would never achieve. What I did not realize then was my father’s level of understanding was very much within my grasp, but maybe not from attempting to memorize lists of words within a language book. For that is all our college gave us books containing lists of phrases, without the exercises or illustrations supplying context, only dry Details to be parroted back to get a departure grade. As I grew old, I became an avid writer. First I attempted to find out words in context and always (and I mean constantly ) consulted with the dictionary. Shortly, I had been actively trying to cultivate my language, picking up novels that could provide brilliant example sentences, vibrant descriptions of a sentence’s background, and synonyms galore. While supplying riveting reading content (at least to get a phrase enthusiast ), these novels normally did not include exercises to reinforce what I heard. It was only through sheer time and effort I managed to construct a powerful vocabulary.
