It’s tough to feel that this preface suggests the fourth variant of Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology our writer team has modulated, and also the 26th version total of the important reference work aimed at health and other healthcare students. As always, we’ve attempted to keep the greatest standards of excellence which were promulgated by the first writer, Fran Ganong, within the 46 years in which he functioned, unusually, as the only author of this textbook. Study of physiological system structure and function, as well as pathophysiological alterations, has its foundations in physical and chemical laws and the molecular and cellular makeup of each tissue and organ system. Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology is structured into seven sections. This first section provides an overview of the basic building blocks or bases that provide the important framework for human physiology. It is important to note here that the seven chapters in this initial section are not meant to provide an exhaustive understanding of biophysics, biochemistry, or cellular and molecular physiology; rather, they are to serve as a reminder of how the basic principles from these disciplines contribute to medical physiology discussed in later sections associated with physiological functions of organs and systems.
We have revised the learning goals for every single chapter, reorganized and updated the text to make sure all goals are obviously addressed in a logical sequence, coordinated chapter summaries so the take-home messages instantly tackle each learning goal consequently, and enlarged the amount of review questions in order that viewers also have the capacity to confirm their comprehension and retention of each goal coated. As a subject evolves and new information evolves, there’s a tendency only to concatenate these theories such that chapter arrangement degrades necessarily with time. With comprehensive talks amongst the writer group and important “spring cleaning,” we think we’ve freshened and simplified the quantity whilst at the same time making certain important new developments are integrated. We’re profoundly grateful to Erica Wehrwein, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology and a award-winning educator at Michigan State University, that took on the job of reviewing the publication as a whole and providing detailed and specific opinions to us on every chapter.
