Now that individuals communicate with one another mostly by social networking, letter-writing is now a lost art. The best casualty might be our growing inability to locate words which just convey our emotions and feelings. A heart. A thumbs-up. However, if the planet arouses your curiosity; if your condition of not understanding leaves you stressed; if your existential angst prevailed; occasionally you simply need to compose a full-up letter to someone. Contained herein is a sampling of my own correspondence, nearly all with total strangers, spanning over two decades, with the majority of letters chosen from a ten-year interval when my email address was publicly available. * During that time, most queries comprised straightforward questions of mathematics. Other words, largely of a private nature, such as those with particular reference to a language I’d given, a book I’ve writtena movie in which I looked, shape the corpus of letters out of which my answers are attracted.
The letters to me personally that convey significant emotion, fascination, or stress are replicated in full. † Other words, of this rambling kind, I outline for brevity in one paragraph. Some letters have been written by those that are upset with the world or using some thing I’ve done or said. Other people research thoughts and beliefs. Still others are unhappy, sensitive, and upsetting. And in many instances there is a longing we have all experienced at one time or another: the hunt for meaning in our own lives; an evergreen impulse to comprehend the place in this world and in this world. Additional, also, are letters I have written, not to anyone but to everyone. These include letters to the editor, largely of this New York Times, in addition to open letters submitted to my Facebook page along with other public areas online. Among the first dates back to my own overlong September 12, 2001, letter to relatives and coworkers, twenty five hours once I bore witness, by a distance of four cubes, into the attack and collapse of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. Above all , borrows in the Astrophysicist is a vignette of the intellect I’ve mustered to instruct, enlighten, and finally commiserate with the inquisitive mind. It is the world as seen through the lens of an astrophysicist-educator. A world today shared with you.
