In today’s workplace, professionals in all areas are expected to adapt to different communication situations. Almost anyone should be able to write routine documents in the workplace, such as memos, emails, letters, and informal reports. In addition, employees must create more complex forms of communication such as official reports, proposals, instructions, definitions, descriptions, web pages, oral presentations, video presentations and more. These professionals must also constantly negotiate technological innovations, communicate in a global market, work as a team, write convincingly, do effective research, and understand the ethical implications of the documents they produce. We wrote workplace technical communication strategies as a medium-sized textbook covering all of the above topics accurately and concisely. Like the first two editions, this third edition text builds on the strengths of the other two technical communications books: Best-Selling Technical Communications, Thirteenth Edition, and The Brief Guide to Technical Communication, Edition Three. We hope both students and teachers will appreciate the new edition of this exciting textbook.
In addition to simplifying the text and thoroughly revising the sample documents and pedagogical features, we have made the following major changes to the third edition of the Strategies. The strategies cover all central themes of the University’s Technical Communication course in a compact but comprehensive format. The book covers everything a technical communication needs to know, from writing basic letters and notes, writing complex proposals and formal reports, creating oral presentations and writing for the web, in approximately 500 pages. Additionally, Strategies provides innovative coverage of emerging technologies used in the workplace, including text messaging, social media and online videos. This book is based on the idea of providing students with practical, accessible and easy-to-follow concepts that allow students to write and design documents on the spot. One of the main features, as the title suggests, is the Strategies box, which provides step-by-step tips for following up on my book and discussing a specific document. Also, the chapters in Sections 3 and 4 emphasize the importance of “implementation” immediately through the “Let’s get started” feature; Students are asked to create their best version of the document type for each class or communication situation before reading the chapter. Then, as they work on the content of the class, students are encouraged to revise and revise their original work. Finally, each chapter, including the Fundamental Chapters and the ‘Blueprints’ from Parts 1 and 2, contains application exercises grouped into common, collaborative, global, digital and social media categories.
